Hand-me-downs ?

Relevant to many earlier posts, we read fresh from the BBC that the Dunfermline, Scotland's largest building society, has effectively collapsed and thus having to be sold off - apparently under pressure from a "tri-partite" conglomurate including the Bank of England and the Government - therefore no doubt moving, at least partly, into "state" control. From the first paragraph of the wikipedia entry:

The Dunfermline Building Society is a
building society based in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. It is the largest building society in Scotland and the 12th largest in the United Kingdom based on total assets of £3.3 billion at 31 December 2006.
